What Is a TPO Roof?

TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin. It is a single-ply roofing membrane made from a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber, reinforced with a polyester scrim for strength. It comes in wide rolls, usually in white, and the seams are joined with hot air to form a continuous, watertight surface.

TPO has become one of the most common flat roof systems on commercial buildings in Canada because it balances cost, durability and energy savings. In Calgary it holds up well to UV, temperature swings and hail when it is installed at the right thickness over a solid insulation board.

How TPO Roofing Membranes Are Made

TPO membranes are manufactured as a single sheet with a reinforcing scrim sandwiched between a top and bottom layer of thermoplastic. Additives in the top layer protect it from UV, heat and weathering. Membranes come in several thicknesses, commonly 45, 60 and 80 mil. Thicker sheets cost more but resist punctures and hail better, which is why we often recommend 60 mil or heavier for Calgary roofs.

How TPO Roofing Systems Are Installed

Iron Shield Roofing

There are three main ways to attach a TPO membrane. We choose the method based on the roof deck, wind exposure, insulation and budget.

Mechanically Fastened TPO

The membrane is fastened to the deck with screws and plates along the seams, then the next sheet is welded over the fasteners. This is fast and economical and works well on steel and wood decks. Fastener spacing is designed for the wind loads at your building.

Fully Adhered TPO

The membrane is glued to the insulation board across its full surface. Fully adhered roofs have a smooth look, resist wind flutter and are a good choice for buildings with high wind exposure or lots of rooftop traffic.

Induction Welded TPO

Special plates hold the insulation and are then heated from above with an induction tool, bonding the membrane to the plates without penetrating it. The result is a strong attachment with fewer fasteners through the sheet.

Benefits of TPO Roofing

Reliable, Weather-Proof Protection Icon

Strong Weather Protection

Heat-welded seams create a continuous surface with no glue joints to fail. TPO stays flexible in cold weather and handles Calgary freeze-thaw cycles well.

Quick Installation Icon

Efficient Installation

Wide rolls and a lightweight sheet mean less disruption to your building and a shorter schedule than many multi-layer systems.

Easy Maintenance Icon

Low Maintenance

TPO resists dirt build-up, algae and punctures. Regular inspections and clear drains are usually all it needs.

Environmentally Friendly icon

Energy Savings

A white TPO surface reflects sunlight, which can lower cooling costs in summer. TPO is also recyclable at the end of its life.

Decades Of Performance Icon

Long Service Life

With proper installation and maintenance, a quality TPO roof can protect your building for 20 years or more.

TPO Roofing in Calgary: Frequently Asked Questions

What Calgary building owners ask us about TPO.

Is TPO good for Calgary weather?

Yes. TPO stays flexible in the cold, handles UV well and its welded seams resist freeze-thaw movement. For hail-prone areas we recommend thicker membranes, 60 mil or more, over a firm cover board.

How long does a TPO roof last?

A properly installed TPO roof usually lasts 20 years or more. Thicker membranes, good drainage and routine maintenance help it reach the upper end of that range.

Can TPO go over an existing roof?

Sometimes. If the existing roof is dry and in sound condition, and building code allows it, TPO can be installed over it with a recovery board. We test for wet insulation before recommending a recover.

Can a TPO roof be repaired?

Yes. Punctures and open seams can be cleaned and patched with heat-welded TPO, which bonds to the existing sheet.
